– Dry bones –
So the other day my dad got me this crazy sweat shirt with a glow in the dark skeleton on the front (because I mean, really, what girl doesn’t dream of getting a sweat shirt with a glow in the dark skeleton on it:))? Actually, my daddy always knows the perfect thing to get me and how to make me laugh with some crazy thing no-one else would think of! But anyway, the sweatshirt made us think of the passage in the book of Ezekiel 37. Have you ever read it?
God led Ezekiel to a valley full of dry bones. Completely dry. Completely dead. God asked him, “Son of man, can these bones live?” What a question! and Ezekiel answers not with a “yes” and not with a “no” but, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”
God told him to prophesy to the bones and God brought the entire valley of dry bones to life. Completely dry bones became an army.
Do you ever feel just completely dead in a sense? Just so at your end that you could think as Israel thought, ” ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone;”(Ez.37:11) It is out of this desperation and brokenness that God can say, ” I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord… Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.
Only out of our complete nothing, can God bring His “something”. The only way to truly live, is to completely die (Jn.12:24). To look at our absolute worthlessness and admit it. We are nothing more than a pile of dry, useless bones(Rm.3:10). No good is within us or can come from us apart from His breath. Let us realize what we are, then be still listen. Believe. Hear Him call you and say to you “Live!”
